The Goodbye Speech I wanted to give…
This is strictly speaking a departure from radio. But in many ways it is still about the heart and soul of the medium. It is about communicating. And even if it is out to an audience of millions, it is still impacting them one person at a time (to paraphrase Bobby Ocean).
I’ve been in radio now for more than 20 years. And in reflection, I can look back and learn from the lessons. One of the biggest was that of gratitude and humility. In a business where you have to have a disproportionately large ego, you can easily lose sight of the ground when you’re flying high.
Most recently, I thought I was finally getting it right. Finally working on a LONG term plan. When suddenly, it came crashing down as my contract was cancelled – for reasons that we shan’t discuss here. Suddenly, I was left without a radio station. But I was far from done, so I launched a daily podcast to allow me to sew my wild radio oats with my radio partner who also had her contract terminated.
I came across this and it made me teary at some points. And it is not because of any fondness I have for Conan O’Brien. On many other occasions, I have felt that he missed the mark, but in this clip he hit the nail firmly and squarely on the head. Examine your life and your career. See if you have that list of people you know you must thank.
I have begun to work on mine.

Here are two truths, Joe, I have had to learn to accept: Change is inevitable, and good things never last (nor do bad things, either, thankfully). Technology nowadays allows the talented and inspired among us to continue pursuing their dreams outside the “standard” media channels. (How different the world is today from the experience we shared launching that new station back in 1990!) You have the wherewithal and creative energy to do so much more beyond the restrictions of terrestrial broadcasting. (It’s a dying industry, anyway.) Run with it!
I got to say Steve, it is such a nice thing for me to read your comments here on the blog. Thank you so much for your encouragement. Your mentorship in my early years in the business still helps me today. I hope that qualifies in some way as at least one good thing that HAS lasted.
